Kailand Morris Is Creating His Own Path

“On

Kailand Morris is no stranger to stardom.

The son of iconic musician Stevie Wonder and celebrated designer Kai Millard Morris, he spent his childhood backstage learning the ins and outs of the industry.

So when designers began to take notice of Kailand’s own personal style and voice it was only natural for him to begin to walk in shows, working with the likes of Comme des Garçons, Pyer Moss, and Dolce & Gabbana.

While finding success on the runway, Kailand was more intrigued with what went on behind the scenes, fascinated by the creation of development of the pieces rather than simply just wearing them on stage.

Knowing he still had more to learn, Kailand connected with Kim Jones at Dior, working as an intern for the vaulted fashion house.

Kailand’s personal relationship with Jones led to his involvement across all facets of Dior’s most recent collection in Miami, a process that Kailand described as grueling but rewarding. Now, while still involved with Dior, Kailand is taking his newfound knowledge and expanding on his own designs, something he’s hoping to be able to share with the world in the near future.

It is refreshing to see Kailand’s reverence of contemporary designers, and in today’s age of instant gratification, it’s impressive to see his willingness to put in the time and work to learn from those contemporaries.

Genuinely excited about the nuances of fashion, Kailand’s face lit up when we sat to discuss the finer details of Rick Owen’s leather pants and the unique beauty of the most recent Jacquemus runway presentation.

If his passion is any indicator for what’s to come, we’re looking forward to seeing Kailand step into his own spotlight and take center stage.

We hung with Kailand in Hollywood as he pulled together some creative looks from the FWRD Man closet.
